Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Once your hormone regime is stable, you may wish to explore adding testosterone to your treatment plan. Before starting testosterone replacement, baseline blood tests are required to ensure suitability. These tests are at an additional cost, which will be explained during your consultation. Once results confirm that treatment is appropriate, we will initiate and manage your therapy. A prescription will be provided, though the cost of testosterone itself is separate and set by the pharmacy. Ongoing blood monitoring will also be required, and the details will be discussed with you at your appointment.
What is testosterone?
Testosterone is a naturally occurring female hormone. Although often thought of as a male hormone, testosterone is produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands and other tissues and plays an important part in female health and wellbeing. As we age, testosterone levels gradually decline, partly due to the loss of ovarian function in peri and post menopause. Women who receive medications to supress ovarian activity, treatments for cancers or surgical removal of the ovaries can experience more pronounced symptoms associated with a decline in testosterone. Testosterone is an essential hormone responsible for healthy sexual function, vaginal health and libido, mood and mental wellbeing, cognitive function, muscle and bone health and energy and vitality.

Do I need testosterone therapy?
Not everybody with low testosterone needs replacement therapy. Some women experiencing low testosterone do not display any symptoms or voice that they are affected by the decline in hormone level. Optimising your HRT is needed prior to starting testosterone replacement therapy. A blood test is needed to determine your testosterone level to see if replacement therapy would benefit you or not.
